Flashback: Kenneth Hirose Wins RGPS San Diego Main Event

Nivel 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Kenneth Hirose
Kenneth Hirose

The RunGood Poker Series' triumphant return to Jamul Casino saw an uptick in entrants as compared to last November. A grand total of 407 entrants over the course of three flights of play beat the set prize pool guarantee and left $211,640 to be split between 52 players. After ten hours of play, there was just one player standing alone at the end.

It was just four short months ago that Kenneth Hirose claimed a career-best score at the WSOP Circuit Commerce. He finished in second place in the Mini-Main event for $53,258. While a significant sum of money, his first big heads-up match had gone awry. Now, he can happily report a heads-up match that went his way.

“It feels much better to take it down,” Hirose said with the new shiny ring wrapped around his finger. “Obviously, that’s the goal of any tournament. To come so close and not close it out, it stings. It just feels a million times better to take the whole thing down.”

Myers Sends A Player to the Rail

Nivel 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

Michael Myers opened the action from middle position with a raise, and once it folded to a player on the button, she three-bet to 6,000. The player on the small blind called, before Myers four-bet 18,300. The player on the button then five-bet all in for her stack of 33,400. The small blind folded and Myers made the call, putting his opponent at risk.

Button: AQ All in
Michael Myers: KK

Myers was poised for a knockout, and the 772 kept him well in front. However, the 8 on the turn gave his opponent a flush draw to go along with an ace as outs. But the river brought the 4 and the pocket kings of Myers remained best, giving him the pot and eliminating his opponent.

Wallace Spikes the River to Stay In It

Nivel 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

Action was picked up on the flop with LaShun Wallace all in for 33,500 and Steven McKuin putting him at risk. The board showed 4K9 and roughly 6,900 in the pot before the flop.

LaShun Wallace: A10 All in
Steven McKuin: K9

McKuin flopped best with his top two pair but would need to fade Wallace's flush draw to score a knockout. McKuin was still in front after the 10 on the turn, but it added five more outs for Wallace. Those outs werent needed though, as the river brought the 6 to give Wallace the flush, and the double up.

Monaghan Bets and Takes It

Nivel 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Action folded to a player on the button who raised to 1,200, and Michael Monaghan in the small blind three-bet to 3,300. It folded back to the player on the button who made the call.

After the 245 flop Monaghan fired out a continuation bet of 2,000, which got a quick fold from his opponent to give Monaghan the pot.

Chop It Up

Nivel 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Action folded to John Swift in the cutoff, and he raised to 1,000. Then Abid Buttar on the button three-bet to 3,000, before Jefferson Morrill four-bet all in for his stack of 33,800. Swift then moved all in as well for his stack 23,500, which got Buttar to fold, leaving the players heads up with Swift at risk.

John Swift: AK All in
Jefferson Morrill: AK

It was an anticlimactic showdown with both players holding ace-king. But the 4Q10 flop gave Swift the freeroll with his backdoor flush draw. But the J ended the flush hopes as both players made a Broadway straight, and the K on the river completed the board, as the players chopped the pot.

Moore Doubles with Aces

Nivel 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

A player from under the gun limped in, and once it folded to Jeremy Moore in middle position, he raised to 1,200. Then Matthew Doyle in the hijack three-bet to 3,700. It then folded to the small blind Donnie Phan who called, and the big blind and under the gun player both folded. Moore elected to then four-bet all in for his stack of 35,800, which Doyle quickly called, and Phan folded to leave the players heads up, with Moore at risk.

Jeremy Moore: AA All in
Matthew Doyle: AQ

Moore was in a dream spot with his pocket aces, and the 357 flop left Doyle needing running cards to crack the aces of Moore. But the 7 on the turn left Doyle drawing dead, and after the K on the river, Moore took the pot and the double up.

After the hand Phan reveled, he folded pocket threes and would have flopped a set.
