Queen High Good For Hansen

We caught a small pot with Gus Hansen that didn't get him a ton of chips but provides an inside look into what makes him such a dynamic player. We caught the action on the river with the board reading {4-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {k-Clubs} {a-Hearts} . There was about 4,000 in the pot, and Hansen checked to his opponent on the button, who fired out 2,000. Hansen did his usual grimace face whenever he has any kind of tough decision, and eventually chucked the 2,000 into the middle.

His opponent could only muster up {j-Spades} {3-Clubs} , and Hansen rolled over {q-Diamonds} {10-Spades} . That's good enough for just queen high, but it was good enough to win here. Hansen is up to 74,000 after that pot.

Set Means Survival for Schwartz

"Bring the camera over here... this is an all-star table."

So said Ryan Fair at Table 424, spotting the ESPN cameras circling about. Noah Schwartz had just been moved to the table, taking a seat to Sorel Mizzi's right, the two of them sitting across from Fair. In fact, the cameraman did come over... and just in time to capture a bit of drama in a hand involving Schwartz.

A player under the gun opened for 1,100, and Schwartz, sitting one seat over, examined his short stack for a while before making the call. It folded to the button who then reraised to 3,600, forcing out the blinds. The original raiser called, and after tanking a bit Schwartz called as well, leaving himself only about 6,300 behind.

The flop came {8-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} . The original raiser led out for 5,300, then Schwartz raised all in for a bit more. The button then responded with an all-in shove of his own, which caused the UTG player to walk away from the table for a moment, he was so exasperated. Finally he folded, saying he had pocket queens.

Schwartz quickly tabled {8-Spades} {8-Clubs} for top set, while his opponent showed {K-Spades} {K-Clubs} . The turn was the {J-Spades} and river the {10-Clubs} , and Schwartz survived.

"Set mining!" said Mizzi with a grin. "There is no method to my madness," said Schwartz.

The dealer fanned {2-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {a-Diamonds} , and the action checked to Buonocore, who fired 2,200. Only Paredes called.

The turn was the {k-Spades} , Paredes checked again, and Buonocore tossed out 3,850, Paredes called.

One Moreno Down

An early-position player made it 1,250 to go and Athanasios Polychronopoulos called from middle position before Tony Moreno also called from the hijack seat. The big blind also called and the flop came down {J-} {10-} {7-} rainbow. Action checked to Polychronopoulos and he bet 2,850. Moreno raised to 7,600 and play folded back to Polychronopoulos. He moved all in and Moreno made the call to put himself at risk.

Bonding Doubles

A middle position player opened to 1,200 only to have Lars Bonding three-bet to 2,700 from the button. It folded back around to the original raiser and he made it 5,000 to go. Bonding opted to five-bet to an unknown amount from the button and his opponent quickly six-bet all in. He had Bonding covered and Bonding snap called for his last 33,000.

The board ran out {2-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {10-Spades} {7-Spades} {7-Hearts} , allowing Bonding's aces to hold and scoring him a double up to roughly 68,000.

We caught up with the action on a {2-Hearts} {9-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {A-Spades} board, where Jennifer Tilly was in a heads-up pot against another player.

Tilly's opponent checked from the big blind and Tilly bet 4,000 from the hijack seat. Her opponent called.

The {4-Spades} completed the board and both players checked.

"Two-pair," Tilly announced.

"Two-pair?" her opponent replied.

"Wait, no," Tilly said, re-checking her hand. "I misread my hand."

Tilly's opponent then tabled {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} for a pair of aces.

"Well that was an expensive mistake," Tilly said as she mucked.

Tilly is down to her last 9,500.

Adams Adds 'Em

Brandon Adams began the day with one of the big stacks. During the first hour he lost a few chips, but just added a few back in a hand versus Igor Sharaskin.

Adams opened with a raise to 1,500 from middle position, and Sharaskin called from the hijack seat. The flop came {J-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} , and when Adams continued for 2,200, Sharaskin quickly called. The turn then brought the {2-Spades} and another bet from Adams, this time for 4,800. Sharaskin tanked for two minutes, then let his hand go.

Brammer Picked Off

Folded to Chris Brammer in the small blind, he raised it up to 1,350. Aaron Potter was in the big blind and made the call, prompting the dealer to spread out a {3-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} flop. Brammer led for 1,600 here and with a call from Potter, the dealer flipped over a {6-Spades} on the turn.

When both players checked the turn, a {k-Hearts} would complete the board on the river. This time Brammer would bet 3,600 and Potter would go deep into tank. Almost two minutes passed before Potter made the call. As soon as Potter's chips hit the felt, Brammer had flung his cards into the muck. The dealer said that someone had to show their cards to win the pot and Potter tabled {7-Clubs} {5-Spades} - strong enough regardless, as Brammer's cards were already lost in a sea of muck cards.
