Kazakhstan's Azamat Tulepbergenov and Adlan Vikayev Ride Shotgun as Day 1a Wraps Up

Nivel 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Azamat Tulepbergenov
Azamat Tulepbergenov

The first of three highlight tournaments got underway today at the 2025 Merit Poker Western Series, with Day 1a of the $2,200 Warm Up, which boasts a huge $1,000,000 guarantee inside the Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino.

When all was said and done, just 25 players remained from the 55 entries, and it was Kazakhstan's Azamat Tulepbergenov who topped the counts after he amassed 637,000 chips — over six starting stacks!

Tulepbergenov got off to a blistering start in the opening level when he turned a gutshot straight draw with king-ten and got all the chips into the middle against Panayiotis Vassiliou, who had flopped bottom set. The Kazakhstani player also sent Paul Newey and Nichan Khorchidian to the sidelines in the later levels on his way to bagging the biggest stack.

Kazakhstan occupies the top two places on the leaderboard as Adlan Vikayev had 472,000 in his stack by the time the day was done. Vikayev scored an elimination of his countrymate Askar Bekbayev during Level 5, then won a huge flip when his ace-king rivered a pair against the pocket jacks of Fredrico Senno. It was smooth sailing from then on for Vikayev, who puts himself in a great spot for Thursday's Day 2.

Arian Kashani once again proved he knows how to navigate his way through a tournament field as he bagged up an impressive 421,500 chips in his pursuit of another major title. Kashani, who recently claimed victory in the UKIPT Nottingham Main Event, displayed the same poise and skill that led him to that success, methodically climbing his way to the top of the chip counts.

"Slow and Steady" seemed to be the theme of Kashani’s day as he consistently chipped up, taking down pot after pot with calculated precision. His patient approach paid off as he built his stack throughout the ten 40-minute levels, keeping him well-positioned for another deep run. Kashani has already shown he knows how to close out a tournament — and with a stack like this, he’s once again a name to watch as the action continues.

Other notables to make it through were Robbie Schiffbauer (340,000), Andrey Golubev (310,500), Danielle Noja (251,500), Tom Verbruggen (230,500), Grigorii Rodin (186,000), and Ran Ilani (127,000).

There are still three more flights that players can enter to try and run up a stack, and late registration is open until Level 15, which is around halfway through Day 2.

Two Champions Face Off

Nivel 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Danielle Noja
Danielle Noja

Danielle Noja opened the cutoff to 4,000 and Arian Kashani made it 11,000 to go on the button. When it got back to Noja, he made the call.

"The two players that won a trophy at UKIPT Nottingham are both playing a hand together," said Noja.

On the 454 flop, Noja check-called a bet of 13,000 from Kashani to see the J drop on the turn. Noja checked once again then folded after Kashani fired out 38,000.

"So what tournament did you win in Nottingham?" asked Kashani. "The Omaha!" replied Noja.

Grodek Dusts Off Lie in the Penultimate Level

Nivel 9 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Aylar Lie
Aylar Lie

Stanislaw Grodek opened the hijack to 4,000 and Aylar Lie three-bet the cutoff to 12,000. When it got back to Grodek, he shoved for around 70,000, and Lie called off her stack of slightly less.

Aylar Lie: AQ All in
Stanislaw Grodek: AK

Lie was at risk and way behind to the superior holding of Grodek. A flop of 1072 did give Lie a backdoor flush draw, but that was eradicated on the 4 turn. Only a queen on the river could save Lie, but instead Grodek improved to top pair when the K completed the runout.

Nuts Against Second Nuts Goes Ponomarev's Way

Nivel 9 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Nikolay Ponomarev
Nikolay Ponomarev

Danielle Noja opened up the action with a raise to 4,500 from the hijack and Nikolay Ponomarev made it 12,500 on the button. Atilla Saracoglu called in the big blind, and Noja also called.

The flop came a monotone 5102, which checked around to Ponomarev, who bet 20,000. Saracoglu quickly folded, and Noja called.

A K on the turn put four clubs on board, and both players checked to the 9 river, where Noja checked and Ponomarev fired 80,000.

"That's a very big bet," said Noja. After taking some time to think, Noja settled on a call.

Ponomarev then showed AQ for the nut flush, and Noja said "I have the same hand, but in reverse!", then flipped AQ for the second nuts.

Fourie Tangles With Kashani, Loses a Chunk of Chips

Nivel 7 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Arian Kashani
Arian Kashani

Arian Kashani opened the cutoff to 3,500 and Azamat Tulepbergenov made it 10,000 from the button. Rudolf Fourie was in the small blind and cold-called, then Kashani four-bet to 33,000. Tulepbergenov folded, but Fourie called.

The flop came 103Q and Fourie check-called a bet of 15,500 from Kashani to the 7 turn, which went check-check.

A 2 dropped on the river and Fourie fired out a bet of 20,000, then after some consideration, Kashani shoved. Fourie had around 75,000 behind, but didn't want to invest another dime into the pocket as he quickly folded, earning Kashani the pot.

Saracoglu's Kings Earn Three Streets of Value

Nivel 4 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Atilla Saracoglu
Atilla Saracoglu

On a flop of 4107, Alisa Sibgatova was under the gun and check-called a bet of 4,000 from Atilla Saracoglu, who was on the button.

A Q dropped on the turn and Sibgatova checked again, then Saracoglu fired 10,500.

"How much do you have behind?" asked Sibgatova before she eventually tossed in the call.

The 8 completed the board and again Sibgatova checked, then Saracoglu took his time before he fired out 25,000. Sibgatova quickly called.

Saracoglu then showed KK for an overpair to the board, and Sibgatova mucked.

Schiffbauer Takes the Chip Lead, Sarais Left Short-Stacked

Nivel 4 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Matteo Sarais
Matteo Sarais

The hand was picked up with Matteo Sarais having 144,300 chips out in front of him from the small blind and Robbie Schiffbauer having made it 40,000 from the button. After thinking for a while, Sarais shoved, and Schiffbauer called for his stack of 141,000.

Robbie Schiffbauer: KK All in
Matteo Sarais: QQ

Schiffbauer was in the lead and would take the chip lead if his pocket kings held up. Sarais would also march to the top of the counts if he could spike a queen, but he would need to go runner-runner after the 7K8 flop gave Schiffbauer top set. No miracle runout occured as the A turn and 7 river meant Schiffbauer improved to a full house, and he doubled up.

Tasyurek's Kicker Plays

Nivel 2 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Halil Tasyurek
Halil Tasyurek

Halil Tasyurek opened the hijack to 1,100 and Arian Kashani called from the cutoff.

Both checked the 39A flop to the J turn, where Tasyurek bet big with a sizing of 3,200, which Kashani called.

A 2 on the river saw Tasyurek check it over to his opponent, who then bet 7,500. Tasyurek thought for a while, but did eventually toss in a call.

Kashani confidently flipped A5 for top pair, but he was out-kicked by Tasyurek, who tabled A7x. At first, the dealer didn't realize that it Tasyurek's pot and wanted to chop it up, but quickly fixed her mistake and sent the pot to its rightful owner.

There's nothing like being unintentionally needled by the dealer!

Tulepbergenov Coolers Vassiliou in 400-Big-Blind Pot

Nivel 1 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante
Azamat Tulepbergenov
Azamat Tulepbergenov

Azamat Tulepbergenov raised from under the gun to 1,000 and got called by Panayiotis Vassiliou in the cutoff, Remy Murcia on the button, and Arian Kashani in the big blind.

The flop came 69Q and after Kashani checked, Tulepbergenov fired out 2,500. Vassiliou called, and both Murcia & Kashani folded.

A J dropped on the turn and Tulepbergenov showed no signs of slowing down with a bet of 5,500. Vassiliou, however, also wanted to turn things a notch and made it 15,500 to go. Tulepbergenov, not one to back down, then moved all in, which sent Vassiliou into the tank. After letting out of huge puff of air, Vassiliou called for his full starting stack, which created a pot of 400 big binds in the opening level.

Panayiotis Vassiliou: 66 All in
Azamat Tulepbergenov: K10

Vassiliou had flopped a set but needed the board to pair on the river as he was behind to the turned straight of Tulepbergenov. Instead, it was Tulepbergenov that improved as the A upgraded his straight to Broadway, which meant he added more chips to his stack and became the early chip leader.

Fear not though, Vassiliou fans, the local player is back in action after a quick visit to the cage.

Simone Andrian
Simone Andrian

The saloons may be gone, and the dusty frontier towns replaced by sparkling casinos, but the spirit of the Wild West lives on in North Cyprus as the 2025 Merit Poker Western Series rides into town. Starting today, the $2,200 Warm Up invites poker’s modern-day gunslingers to load their chips, fire off bluffs, and duel their way to victory — all with a $1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool on the line at the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino.

Players will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Simone Andrian, who overcame a roller-coaster ride at the final table to capture the 2024 Warm Up crown. The Italian professional outlasted a field of 446 entries, defeating Abdullah Alajmi heads-up to claim $165,000 and add another prestigious title to his growing poker resume. Andrian’s dramatic victory saw him recover from being the short stack at one point, winning a series of key all-ins to complete a memorable comeback.

The 2023 Warm Up produced a different type of champion, as John Doe, an anonymous player hidden behind a mask and hoodie, took down the title and $181,200 after a heads-up duel with Recep Aydemir. Both years produced thrilling finales, with top pros such as Paul Browne, David Hu, Helmut Phung, and Adrian State all making deep runs.
