Detienne Lays One Down

Nivel 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

The very same two players battle again and the small blind check-raised from 12,000 to 40,000 on the {J-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop. Kevin Detienne called and the small blind then immediately went all in once the dealer spread the {8-Clubs} turn. Detienne asked for a count and then folded to the bet of 48,500.

The small blind said "good fold" and seat two jumped into the discussion with a "For you or him?" "Him," the small blind replied. Detienne nodded and was pretty sure his opponent had a big hand there.

96 players left.

Munro Smells a Bluff

Nivel 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Richard Munro
Richard Munro

Richard Munro recounted a recent hand to us which saw him regain the lead of the Seniors Championship and we will recount it now for you, minus the colorful language.

Three players including Peter Costa with {a-}{k-} were involved in the hand and saw a flop of {9-}{7-}{6-}. Some betting on the flop saw Costa fold his hand but Munro with {8-}{8-} made the call and they saw a turn card {a-}. The player to Munro’s right then went all in for 75,000.

Well, Munro just didn’t believe the story, and if the fella had it then he had straight outs that could come to the rescue. Munro made the call and sure enough the all in player turned over {q-}{10-}. The turn and river bricked and Munro claimed another scalp.

Bob Hooks: The Forgotten Texas Road Gambler

Nivel 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Not many people are familiar with Bob Hooks, but he is a man the poker world should not soon forget. Despite not being active in the poker world anymore, Hooks came up as a Texas road gambler with the likes of Doyle Brunson, T.J. Cloutier, Johnny Moss, Amarillo "Slim" Preston, and so many more.

Hooks got his start in Texas, as so many of the old-time poker legends did, before he eventually made the leap to Las Vegas. Alongside his roommate Brian "Sailor" Roberts, Hooks made it to heads-up play in the 1975 World Series of Poker Main Event, but lost out on the title. Even without poker immortality reached, Hooks has so much to offer looking back on the old days of the game.

To hear some great stories from Hooks and find out much, much more about the legend, please click here to read Chad Holloway's feature piece.

Poker Is a Sick Game

Nivel 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Pok Kim had been nursing a short stack for quite some time and just moved all in from the button for what looked like 15 big blinds. Herbert Bennett made the call out of the big blind and turned over {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Kim had that beat with {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs} but the {10-Spades}{A-Spades}{10-Hearts} saw her luck turning to just one out. Both the {8-Diamonds} turn and the {4-Diamonds} delivered no miracle and Kim headed to the rail with a great story to tell.

"This was the sickest flop I ever had in my life," said Bennett and started stacking the chips.

Epparla Exits

Nivel 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Ramana Epparla
Ramana Epparla

It takes more than good folds to win tournaments as Ramana Epparla has just proved in his bust out hand. He was in the small blind and held {3-}{3-} and ended up running a triple barrel bluff on an eventual board that read {9-}{2-}{2-}{8-}{10-}. Unfortunately his opponent had more chips than him and had started the hand with {9-}{9-}.

Epparla had played a solid thoughtful game over the past two days but tournament poker can be a cruel mistress and one big mistake can see you out on your ear.

Phillips Wins A Flip

Nivel 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Yesterday Dennis Phillips couldn’t win a flip; today he just won one that doubled him up to just above average. It was all in preflop against Tanya Gawarecki.

Phillips had the dreaded {a-}{k-} and Gawarecki had the even less loved {j-}{j-}.

This time the ace king prevailed but, as they both recalled it, the flop was {a-}{k-}{q-} giving her outs to a straight but the ten didn’t pop out of the deck and they swapped stack sizes.
