Nivel 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
Goin' For the Gold
Goin' For the Gold

Day 1a of Event #54: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em is officially in the books! We started the day with 1,932 players and play ceased at the end of level nine with 275 players remaining. Our chipleader is Paul Volpe who finished the day with a massive stack of 124,500. We didn't see any other stacks over the 100,000 mark at the end of play.

Notable names that will continue on to Day 2 include Pierre Neuville, Fatima Moreira De Melo, Randy Lew, Brandon Cantu, Matt Stout, Paul "X22" Magriel and Devin Porter.

A number of recognizable faces took to the felt today but weren't able to gain enough momentum and were eliminated from the tournament including Antonio Esfandiari, Tony Dunst, Dan Heimiller, Andy Black, Men Nguyen, and Hoyt Corkins.

Tomorrow Day 1b will begin and they will play nine levels (just as the players did today), then the remaining players from both days will join together on Monday for Day 2. Make sure to keep your browser here on PokerNews for all your WSOP updates!

Rosengarten Running Good

Nivel 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Robert "The Thorn" Rosengarten has aquired a few more chips and was kind enough to give us the details of a pot he recently won. After the turn with the board reading {8-}{2-}{2-}{10-} Rosengarten bet 2,000 and was called by his opponent. When the {5-} came on the river Rosengarten's bet was 1,850 and his opponent called again.

Rosengarten showed his {a-}{10-} which was good enough to take the pot and boost his stack up to near the 20,000 mark. Rosengarten won a WSOP Circuit Event in New Orleans in 2009, and has already cashed in two events during this years WSOP including a 17th place finish in the $2,500 8-game event.

Big Slick Prevails for Cantu

Nivel 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Brandon Cantu was under the gun and raised to 1,800. A player in middle position responded by moving all in for 7,475, which cleared the field back around to Cantu. He made the call and the cards were turned up.

Cantu: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

Big slick had Cantu out in front and the {7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} strengthened his position by delivering him a flush draw. The {J-Spades} was close to a queen, but safe as far as Cantu was concerned. When the {5-Spades} blanked on the river, Cantu raked in the pot. He is up to 22,000.

Lew Loses to Two Pair

With the board already reading {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}, the player in the big blind check-called a bet of 8,800 from PokerStars Team Pro Randy Lew who was on the button. The big blind showed his {a-Spades}{8-Clubs} and Lew mucked his hand. Lew's stack dropped down to 11,000 after the hand.

Three-Way Action

Nivel 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Three players including Amnon Filippi ended up all in preflop.

Filippi: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Opponent 1: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Opponent 2: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The board ran out {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and the player with queens tripled up while Filippi took down the side pot to boost his stack up to 21,700.

Huge Chip Leader Emerges

We were scouring the room for big chips stacks when we saw a huge hand take place. We didn't catch all the details, but we do know the money got in on a {8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop, and when we say money we're talking a pot worth 110,000!

Volpe: {8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Opponent: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

Neither the {9-Spades} turn nor the {4-Diamonds} river changed a thing and Volpe took down the gigantic pot. While the other big stacks are somewhere between 40,000-60,000, Volpe is out in front with an astounding 115,000!

Back in Black

Nivel 8 : 200/400, 50 ante

The remaining 357 players are all back to their tables in the black section of the Pavilion room and play has now resumed. Because play is going to cease when we hit 290 players (15% of today's starting field) it's possible we may not make it to the end of this level. Only time will tell!
