The road to PokerStars European Poker Tour glory always has plenty of twists and turns, and the record-breaking 2023 EPT €5,300 Prague Main Event was no exception.

Jon Kyte, who had led the tournament from Day 3, entered the finale with 229 big blinds and a historic chip lead, one that was assumed to be unassailable. Padraig O'Neill had other ideas and was unexpectedly awarded the final EPT Trophy of the 2023 season after overcoming the Norwegian in heads-up play.

Known affectionately as "Smidge" in the Irish poker community, O'Neill came into the day as the shortest stack and turned his 12 big blinds into a €1,030,000 payout. With the victory, he became Ireland's second-ever EPT Main Event champion, 11 years after Steve O'Dwyer reigned supreme in Monte Carlo.

Benjamin Spragg
Benjamin Spragg

Benjamin Spragg opened to 50,000 from the hijack. He was called by Joern Madsen on the button and Mat Rusen in the big blind.

All three of them checked the KJJ flop leading to the 2 turn where Rusen bet 55,000. Spragg called, and so did Madsen.

The 4 completed the board and after Rusen and Spragg checked, Madsen bet 125,000. Rusen quickly folded, but Spragg went deep into the tank.

He eventually made the call and scooped the pot after Madsen sent his cards into the muck.

Desset Scoops Huge Pot with Rockets

Nivel 23 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Andrej Desset
Andrej Desset

Cards were on their backs and stacks were in the middle, with Emeric Farkas and Andrej Desset all-in for 300,000 and 995,000 respectively, both of whom had been looked up by Konstantinos Nanos with the covering stack.

Emeric Farkas: 109 All in
Andrej Desset: AA All in
Konstantinos Nanos: AK

Desset was in great shape, and as the dealer prepared to spread the flop, Farkas pleaded for help.

The Q85 flop gave Farkas plenty of hope, with a flush draw and straight draw, and he shouted "Yes" when he saw the cards.

The 9 turn improved Farkas but not to the holding he was hoping, and the 7 river was a brick to send the pot to Desset, much to Farkas' disappointment. Nanos was also not pleased, and Desset rocketed over 2,000,000.
